As you guys know from our previous posts, Google has launched a experimental high speed broadband service to many areas in the United States. Recently Google have announced that Standford University in California is one of the areas they will be providing 1 Gbps to. The service will be provided to 850 faculty and staff's homes on the campus. Their goal is to to build up to 50,000 or maybe 500,000 people with this ultra-high speed broadband. According to The Official Google Blog, "Stanford’s Residential Subdivision—our first “beta” deployment to real customers—will be a key step towards that goal. " I see this as a very good idea for Google because Google's HQ is reasonably close by to Standford University's campus so if the service is in need of any maintenance or analysis; it'll be quick to send the results to Google's HQ to manage. Also Stanford University is quite a prestigious university; therefore, they are bound to have bright students and excellent lecturers to give their feedback. Let's hope this service will eventually spread throughout the world soon!

It may because they have more information about high speed broadband. Student commonly use high speed broadband to make their assignments and projects. They need a fast technology to do some research and information by using the internet. Nowadays, most of student use internet more than books to make a research or to find an information. While business men, they commonly use internet technology to communicate with others business partner that stayed in other countries. High speed broadband technology is the fastest internet, so their work and communication will become faster. Average user may not have enough information about high speed broadband. They may think every broadband have the same speed and quality. We should share more information to other users so that they have the same thought and have more information about high speed broadband. With this, high speed broadband will have more users then now.
RM1billion initiative to provide school children from poor households with Internet-enabled netbook computers and promote high-speed broadband usage. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced the National Broadband Initiative at the Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur. Under the programme, a student would only have to pay RM38 a month for the netbook and Internet access. Needy students in rural areas will pay even less RM20 a month. They also setting up 138 Internet centres for the rakyatat state information department offices that will benefit 400,000 people and 1,105 e-kiosks at community centres nationwide, at the cost of RM40million in total.
High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) as defined in Webopedia.com isa set of mobile telephony protocols that includes two popular standards; HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) and HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access).HSPA was deployed in 2005 and has been evolving ever since.HSPA services are mostly found in mobile devices such as mobile phones or laptops with HSPA modems. Compared to Wideband Code Division Multiple Acces (WCDMA), which was what most mobile devices use to access the Internet or transfer data, HSPA was a big step up to Internet access through mobile devices. WCDMA supports up to 384 Kbps downlink speed and uplink speed. While HSPA supports up to 14.4 Mbps downlink speed and 5.7 Mbps uplink speed.
HSPA+ also know as "Evolution of HSPA" or "I-HSPA" is the successor of HSPA. It supports up to 42 Mbps downlink speed and 11 Mbps uplink speed. Not many Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) carriers provide HSPA+ service. As mentioned in the previous post, T-Mobile in North America does provide this speedy data connection. Our recent poll asking,"What speed is considered high speed broadband?" was asked last week and it has shown that 50% of voters chose 10Mbps and 20Mbps; while 5Mbps had a 0% vote. Now the phrase 'high speed broadband' can serve to many different meanings when it comes to speed. There is never really a definite throughput of a connection that defines it as high speed broadband. But there is one for broadband, according to the FCC,

So therefore, the term High Speed Broadband can be defined differently depending on different ISP's or users. But in our opinion, any Internet connection speed faster than 10Mbps is considered because most ISP's in the world are providing fast broadband connection in the range of 10Mbps and higher.
T-mobile has launched new technology it is called “HSPA+ technology”. Its offers speeds of up to 21 Mbps. Recently, the company of t-mobile is reducing its data pricing on a promotional basis. The operator now offers 15 devices, including this month's launch of the myTouch 3G. One device, the webConnect Rocket, is the only device that can take advantage of the HSPA+ speeds. HSPA+ networks are backward compatible down to the slowest HSPA speeds. In April, t-mobile dropped 5 GB data cap on its broadband plan.
This analysis poll week 5 shows that amongst 47 total votes, 81% of it chose fiber optic, 11% on cable and 9% on Ethernet. The right answer for the question is actually fiber optic. Fiber optic it is made up of super-thin filaments of glass or other transparent materials that can carry beams of light. Because a fiber-optic cable is light-based, data can be sent through it at the speed of light. Using a laser transmitter that encodes frequency signals into pulses of light, ones and zeros are sent through the cable. The receiving end of the transmission translates the light signals back into data which can be read by a computer. Compare to a cable and Ethernet, their connection is much slower than fiber optic.

From the poll that we have created for week 4, you can see that both Unifi and Time Broadband are both tied at 50%. While PenangFON is at 0%. That is probably because PenangFon is not that well marketed or advertised. Also because PenangFON offers only fiber optic connection to only businesses. Unifi is definitely more known that the rest and I must say that Unifi is probably the most known high speed broadband service provider in Malaysia. That is because they can market very well and they know how to sell. But Unifi's prices for the amount of speed offered is quite high and that is probably why it was tied with Time Broadband. Now with Time Broadband, they offer up to 50Mbps and I believe is the only service provider in Malaysia to do so. The pricing for Time Broadband's 50Mbps is exactly the same price as Unifi's 10Mbps at RM199 per month. That probably also tells why Time Broadband had a higher vote than expected.
Google plans a test that will provide 50,000 to 500,000 people with fiber-optic broadband internet access with the speed of a gigabit per second soon this year. They said that they are planning to test the ultra high speed broadband in a small number of trial location across the states. The speed they delivered is more than a 100 times faster than what Americans have access today. Their goal is to experiment with new ways to help make internet access better and faster for everyone. They also said that broadband is a major driver of new jobs, businesses and high speed internet access must be much more widely available. Google suggested trials of gigabit per second Net access in comment to the Federal Communications Commission's National Broadband Plan, but Google then realize that itself could be a catalyst. Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) has so far spent RM1.3bil of the RM11.3bil allocated for the high-speed broadband (HSBB) project. Most of that was spent to develop the core network and to secure international capacity to prepare for HSBB. The next stage will be rolling out fibre optics for the last mile at targeted geographical locations, which are high density areas within the Federal Territory and Selangor. the total HSBB investment, the Government will contribute RM2.4bil, which will take the form of disbursement, on a one-to-one matching basis. In other words, the Government will give RM1 to TM for every RM1 that it invests in HSBB, up to a maximum of RM2.4bil. datuk zam isa, the Chief Executive Officer, Malaysia Business, TM said that by the end of 2012, about 1.3 million premises would have access to HSBB services, in accordance with the completion of the first phase of the project agreed with the Government. TM currently has close to 1.4 million broadband customers. TM is experiencing a smaller growth in net additions for its broadband service, while WiMAX operator Packet One Networks (M) Sdn Bhd has been enjoying high subscription rates.

Now in South Korea, citizens enjoy an average download speed of 43.3 Mbps. The average American download rate, by comparison, hangs around8.9 Mbps. In the future, South Korea plans to build a super broadband infrastructure will upload and download speeds of 1Gbps by 2013 and soon the internet users of South Korea may be able to download stuff only in seconds example they can download a full length movie in less than two seconds!. The project will cost about 24.5 billion dollars, and will largely be funded by trage he private sector. Being called one the most wired places on earth, the new service will be available in large cities and a paltry 50-100 Mbps connection in a smaller South Korean towns.
Now when I heard there were such connection speed of 50 Mbps in other countries, I was blown away. I didn't even know such speed exist then and now to hear that Google is providing a few selected communities with 1 Gbps is crazy! That is 100 times faster than my Internet connection! This isn't for all consumers though, it is only for a few selected areas in America. They issued a request for communities to apply on February 10 2010 . This is not a service for all consumers yet, it is only an experiment to find new ways of improvement for the broadband world and to see how life would be with 1 Gbps. The picture below shows all the communities that applied and the bigger dots are the ones that had more than 1,000 residents apply for nomination.Great things are to come in the near future. Education, hospitals, economy, and etc. will be high affected by increase of broadband technology.

Openness and choice: to operate an "open access" network, giving users the choice of multiple service providers. They'll manage their network in an open, non-discriminatory and transparent way.
One third of Americans which is about a hundred million people are said to be without broadband at home. The Federal Communication Commission(FCC) submitted the plan to Congress saying that broadband was the greatest infrastructure challenge. Their main goal is to provide speed of 100 Megabits per second compared to an average of 4 Megabits per second which is the internet speed of most American would have right now.
What Government will do
Connect 100 million homes to super-fast broadband with speeds up to 100 megabits per second.
Allocate spectrum to allow network updates for wireless broadband.
Increase adoption rates to 90% and make sure every child is digitally literate before they leave school.
Encourage greater competition among providers to make prices cheaper and deals easier to understand.
Use digital switch-over fund to bring cheap broadband to rural areas.
Provide one gigabit broadband to schools, hospitals and military installations.
I must say that I'm not very surprised of the 42% of the votes going to TMnet as the worst customer service. I'm sure many of us have been through the experience of subscribing to TMnet's Internet service only to receive the actual service a month of two later, some even longer! I hope this will only improve in the future,so us Malaysians will be able to receive quality service that we pay for. The 29% of the votes that gave props to TMnet's service must have been the 'lucky' ones. I'm not saying that all of the service is bad, but it's the process of receiving it that is terrible. As for the other 29%, I hope that you guys will receive much better service when you do subscribe for TMnet's Internet service. And to the ones that didn't get the chance to vote,what do you think about TMnet's customer service?
Fiber optic is much better than DSL. These two technologies are commonly compared by others. DSL or Digital Subscriber Line is transmitted through telephone wire that is made from copper. It is capable up to 8 Mbps for downloading some files. Fiber optic cables are made of glass. The speed of fiber optic connection using fiber optic cables is up to gigabits per second, it is much faster than DSL cable. Fiber optic connection is six times faster than the fastest DSL connection and it is up to 50 Mbps. The availability of FiOS or fiber optic is sparsely available. It is not like DSL connection that are easy to deployed by everyone because fiber optic connection are involving installing all new fiber optic cables that are made of glass. While DSL cables are easy to deployed or used by everyone is because DSL cables is more casual internet rather than fiber optic. DSL and fiber optic are using the same hardware to communicate with the computers. They use router or modem to interface with computers or other internet devices. Even fiber optic is better than DSL, fiber optic service is more expensive than DSL service. It is because fiber optic connection is not available to all area, it is very costly for one company to set all up the networks to all area. The material of fiber optic is more expensive than the material of DSL. It is true that fiber optic is much better than DSL.
As you can see in the chart, most people don’t have a High Speed Broadband connection at home. One of the reason is, it is to expensive. For just a basic user of internet, we don’t higly recommend to have a High Speed Broadband unless you are a rich person. High Speed Internet Broadband is suitable for hardcore games, heavy downloaders and for people that can afford it. As for the one that still don’t know what it is, we will do our best to explain further on.
Now, we are going to explain to you about subscribing high speed broadband in Malaysia. The first thing you can do is you can go to http://www.unifi.my/ and you can choose which on which category you want. They have 2 categories which are for Consumer or Bussiness. In order to get this HSBB internet connection, you have to go to the TM point and ask for a registration form. In the first category which is for consumer, they have 3 packages. The first one is VIP20 and its RM 249.00 per month. It have special features like we can have free calls to TM fixed line and to call mobile or other fixed line numbers is just 10 sen per minute. For downloading and uploading it can go up to 20 Mbps. There are so much more you can get from this package. The other package on consumer category is VIP10. The price is RM 199.00 per month and some of the features is almost the same as the VIP20 but the difference is just the speed. For downloading and uploading the speed can go up to 10 Mbps and you can download 90 GB per month. Last but not least is the VIP5. It’s RM 149.00 per month and for downloading and uploading is up to 5 Mbps. It’s the lowest speed from the other two packages. So for us, it is better to subscribe the VIP20 package. To subscribe this Unifi, first thing you have to do is you have to check your availability in your area. Then, if your area is serviceable, you can go to the nearest TM point to subscribe Unifi. You can also subscribe this through phone calls by calling TM Unifi Centre at 1300881222 and they have an email address so that they can communicate with the user easily at unifi@tm.com.my.

Fiber optic cables are the new technology to gaining faster speeds when it comes to data transfer. This cable is being used for telephone communication, medical imaging, cable TV, and etc. Now in order to achieve high speed broadband, you'd need fiber optic cables. A fiber optic cable is made purely of hair-like strand or strands of glass at its core,an outer material called Cladding,and a plastic on its outer coating. The reason it was made of glass is that if you shine a light at glass at 90 degrees, it passes right through without any interference. But if you shine it at an angle almost parallel to the glass, it reflects off causing the end result to be obvious. So, no matter how the data is produced through the cable, the result would be much clearer than it would be on copper cables. It sends light signals for transmission and transmit only digital signals. It is more expensive than the copper cables, but a massive difference in results are achieved. Soon, all businesses and homes will be using fiber optic cables.
There are two types of fiber optic cables:
Single mode
The single mode cables are made of a single narrow fiber glass cable at its core. It increases the transfer rate and the distance of the transmission. And it costs more than the multi mode cables.
Multi mode
Multi mode cables consists of multiple hair-like strands which are bigger than single mode cables in diameter. It is not recommended for use when one wants to transfer data over long distance because the multiple paths of light can affect the end result to be unclear.
There many different types of fiber optic cable connectors, but these are just the most commonly used ones.

Do you know what broadband is? Surprisingly most people do not know the true definition of broadband. In Webopedia it says "A type of data transmission in which a single medium (wire) can carry several channels at once. Cable TV, for example, uses broadband transmission. In contrast, baseband transmission allows only one signal at a time." Now broadband doesn't necessarily mean Internet connection.
